Digital Production BuZZ for January 24, 2013

BuZZ_Tile-125x100Since the BuZZ is based out of LA, you may think when we say “audition” we are talking about a beautiful actress reading at a casting call. Ah, sorry, nope, not tonight. Tonight, we are talking about Adobe Audition, the audio recording, repair, and mixing software. Leading off tonight’s program is Durin Gleaves, the Product Owner of Audition at Adobe Systems. No matter how great your images are, if you have poor audio, no one will watch. Audition can help you capture audio that will make your projects shine or, if necessary, help you “fix it in post.” When you need to spruce up your audio, consider Audition. You may have heard that one of our frequent guests to the BuZZ, the team at Imagineer Systems, won an Oscar! Yep. On February 9th at the Beverly Hills Hotel, Philip McLauchlan, Allan Jaenicke, John-Paul Smith and Ross Shain are going to walk the red carpet as they are presented with a special honor for scientific and technical achievement for mocha. It is always nice to see the good guys win and tonight on the BuZZ, we’ll get a chance to find out more as we speak with J-P and Ross. What a party it will be!

Remember a few years ago when Apple retired the xRAID and started promoting Promise RAID technology? Since then, we’ve been paying very close attention to the folks at Promise. Randy Chan, their Product Marketing Manager, has been with them for 25 years and has spent most of his career in the storage and archival arena.

So, think of tonight as a combination learning experience and congrats fest to our very successful friends!

Don’t forget to contact me with suggestions for guests: news@catania.us – please put The BuZZ in the subject line!

See you on Twitter at @Cirina and @DPBuZZ

Thanks for listening!

MobileKids App Launches Today

Article first published as MobileKids App Launches Today on Technorati.

PALO ALTO, CALIF. (January 24, 2013) – Bipper, developer of mobile personal safety products, today announced a new app for iPhone and Android devices that enables parents to block inappropriate downloads, track their child’s locations via GPS in emergencies and receive regular reports on mobile phone usage.

MobileKids App tracks kids in an emergency

Children know when the app has been installed and are able to view what their parents have programmed.  Parents do not have access to the child’s private emails or text messages, but they do have the ability to monitor their child’s contacts and block anyone deemed inappropriate.  It is also possible for Mom and Dad to program usage thresholds and schedule certain times during the day or night when the child is not allowed access to the phone.

The GPS feature, Safety Alarm, is a one-click SOS alert that can be activated by the child when they need help or feel unsafe.  At that point, real-time tracking kicks in and the child can be located immediately.

Note:  The MobileKids app is free until April 1. For more information and downloads, visit Mobile Kids.

Bipper was founded in Norway in 2007 by a mother of three, Silje Vallestad, and launched the bSafe program in 2011 in response to parents who had expressed a need to reach their children in an emergency.  The company now has branch offices in Silicon Valley and Kiev.  They have received several awards including Red Herring Global, Rookie of the Year, Bully Award, Mobile Premier Award and SLMagine. In 2011, Silje Vallestad was named Norway’s Entrepreneur of the Year.

The Digital Production BuZZ – Jan 10, 2013

Press crowds iM Watch_DSC08714What a week this is!  I am at the International CES convention in Las Vegas and will have lots of news for you in the next few days, but thought it would be nice to give you an update on what is happening on the Digital Production BuZZ for January 10, 2013.

It is hectic beyond belief at the International CES convention in Vegas, but Steven Chu, CEO of the Emmy-award-winning animation company, Toon Boom, has agreed to join us so we can get an update on all that is new in animation software.

And there is no moss growing under Larry Jordan’s feet!  He has just returned from the Storage Visions Convention and has some great interviews for us, including one with Chris Bross, Strategic Technical Alliances expert with DriveSavers Data Recovery.  If you’ve ever lost data or a disc, you know how important it is to protect yourself and how hard it is to repair a damaged disc.  This is one interview you won’t want to miss. Later in the show, Doug Hansen, PhD with Millenidata (MDisk), gives us some insight about burnable DVD’s that have an almost unlimited shelf life.

Straight from Moscow, comes Dmitriy Vatolin, CEO os YUVsoft, an award-winning company specializing in 2D to 3D images.  Dmitriy has over 16 years experience in the fields of compression media and stereoscopic 3D Video.

I’ll join in for a couple of quick minutes toward the end of the show to give you some highlights of the 2013 International CES taking place as I write this in Las Vegas. With over 200,000 attendees and thousands of exhibitors and press from all over the globe, this yearly gathering is one of the most important for anyone interested in tracking consumer markets and the companies that produce for them.

As ever, thanks for listening to the BuZZ!

Please contact me at BuZZ@catania.us with questions, comments, or suggestions for guests.

Digital Production BuZZ for January 3, 2013 (2013??? already???)

BuZZ_Tile-125x100
Happy New Year everyone!
Last week we hosted our BuZZ family of regulars and had a very lively discussion about 2012 and a look forward to 2013.
Tonight, we continue that theme and talk specifically about some technological challenges.
Michael Cioni, CEO of Light Iron Digital, a post-production house in Los Angeles http://www.lightiron.com enjoys front-row seats as he works with some of our industry’s biggest releases.  He has a very interesting take on the last 12 years as our industry transitioned from film to digital.  Maybe we haven’t come as far as we think?  We are curious about what he sees for the future.  Prior to the interview, you might want to read his lastest blog post entitled, “the DIT dilemma” –  http://michaelcioni.tumblr.com/post/38993994656/the-dit-dilemma  – yes, our business continues to evolve.  Michael gets out his crystal ball and tells us more.
It seems that all our more geeky friends are talking about the high-frame rates used for the recent film, “The Hobbit.”  Qube Cinema’s digital cinema server and 4K integrated media blocks were recently used at both the New Zealand and London premieres of the film. What does the integration of this technology mean for the present and the future of cinema? And, will you be seeing more 4K in a cinema near you very soon? Rajesh Ramachandran, President and CTO of Qube Cinema has some of the answers we are seeking!  Check out Qube here:  http://www.qubecinema.com
Philip Hodgetts, President of Intelligent Assistance always has something extremely useful to talk about.  Today, I wanted to get more into the details of how to prep for post, and who better to ask?  If you are in production and you haven’t planned for post or met with your post supervisor, then you might want to think about switching careers!  Philip blogs at http://www.philiphodgetts.com
And, with some words of inspiration for all of us, we are pleased to speak with Anna Easteden, who is not only gorgeous, but incredibly intelligent.  She is an award-winning actress, a successful model and writes a regular newsletter.  I asked Anna how she stays motivated and I think you will be impressed at the positive energy and professional work ethic that contributes to her success!  http://www.AnnaEasteden.com
Please contact me at buzz(@)catania(dot)us with suggestions for guests or in true BuZZ fashion – just to say “hi” and tell us you like the show.  See you on Twitter at @Cirina and @DPBuZZ
Thanks for listening!

A Chance Encounter – Hope for Today’s Youth

After the tragedy in Sandy Hook last week, we are all wondering what is going to happen in the world.  We are asking ourselves,”Why?” And maybe our confidence in human nature has been nicked, but I refuse to give up hope.  Most people are good. They are kind-hearted and generous. In my travels around the world, I constantly meet people who touch my heart, give me food for thought, inspire me, or just plain make me laugh.

Today, on a photo expedition through UCLA, cameras in hand, my photographer buddy, Norman and I ran into a group of students from Seoul, Korea, who were visiting their friend, Christine Kim,  in the United States.  We spent a few minutes with them and were absolutely enchanted by their friendly innocence, intelligence and positive outlook on life.

Spend some time with young people like these and you will be renewed with hope for a great life for all of us in 2013!

So to Kyu Min Lee, Daniel Kim, Joo K Young Lee, Jihee Kim, Christine Kim (future therapist, urban administrator, landscape architect, physics professor and business woman) – Happy New Year!  Great travels.  And when you graduate and go out in the world, keep that optimistic outlook on life with you. It is infectious.

Digital Production BuZZ for Thursday, December 27, 2012

Tonight on the Digital Production BuZZ, as Larry Jordan and Michael Horton take their places in front of the microphones and as listeners from over 170 countries in the world settle down for another live show, I am struck by how fortunate we are to be able to share this time together.
Cirina-250x-for-web
Since September of 2007, when Larry asked me to produce the BuZZ for him, the search has been on each week for very special guests who would enjoy being on the air with us and who would have something timely to share. From the industry veteran who has been around for 40 years, to the newcomer with a great start-up, everyone who has visited us has left a mark on the BuZZ’s legacy.  I am constantly amazed at how much there is to learn and share in our business! It sure is fun.
All who work on the BuZZ are industry veterans with jobs and lives that take them to all corners of the world, yet they continue to devote their time on a regular basis to help our show be what it is, the longest-running tech podcast on the planet!  Thanks tonight to all our regulars listed above who are once again sharing their knowledge with us!  We are so grateful.
Thanks to you, our listeners, as well.  We get emails from people who have learned something new or been inspired to carry-on throughout he hard times and also from those who wish to celebrate their successes and good times.  Could it be that in our industry more than any other, we are surrounded by kindred and creative souls?  Seems like it from where I sit!
So, as we gather for our sixth annual “look back and look forward” show, I invite you to just sit back and enjoy an hour of friendly discussion with some of our industry’s greatest minds.
After the show, you might want to  visit our archived and individually searchable interviews (over 900 to date!).   Spend some time discovering the many resources available to you there:  http://http://www.digitalproductionbuzz.com/buzz-audio/
Of course, we invite you to subscribe to us on iTunes at:  https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/digital-production-buzz-aac/id73329533
And, if you are so inclined, please tell your friends about us.  We don’t advertise, so this has all been built by your word-of-mouth.  This is all for you, our listener!

And, most of all, thanks for letting us into your homes every week!

Happy New Year!
May 2013 be the best ever for you, your family and all your friends.

Conversations

LIfe in the creative lane, Photo by Cirina Catania

Life is a conversation. With ourselves. With others.

Sometimes we are passive and we just listen.

Other times we talk.

Sometimes we are heard and often, not.

Footprints made as we walk in these conversations

Beat a pathway through this garden called life.

Look to the side and you’ll see friends and family.

Look behind you and you’ll see the birth of your life’s legacies.

Look ahead and you’ll wonder at all the mysteries yet to be solved.

Above all, keep walking. Live life and have those conversations.

Digital Production BuZZ for Thursday, Dec 20, 2012

We have an interesting, eclectic and inspiring show tonight!
Tune in from 6 to 7 pm Pacific at http://www.digitalproductionbuzz.com

David Lewandski, animator extraordinaire turned director at Pulse Films, gives us the back-story of his incredible work building an animated arm for Elijah Wood for Flying Lotus’ music video, Tiny Tortures. David’s work has recently been seen in Tron and will be featured in the upcoming Tom Cruise starrer, Oblivion. Check out the eerie and very cool video at http://vimeo.com/54585743

Then Terry Curren, Founder of the Editor’s Lounge and Alpha Dogs post production house is chatting with Larry and Michael about the best and worst of 2012. http://www.alphadogs.tv

Brian Arrowood, National Sales Director for StreamVu represents a company that provides everything we need to stream our content on the web. This solution is different from others we’ve spoken with in the recent past and I know you will find it fascinating. For a very modest cost, producers can create their own network and stream live, on demand or via a pay-per-view solution. http://www.streamvu.com

And because we know that the last week has been very difficult for all of us as we watched the events unfold from Newtown, Connecticutt, we thought we would take a few moments to think about what is important, and that is – love. Kathleen Kinsolving wrote a popular book called, “Dogs of War,” and will be with us to talk about the amazing group of K-9 rescue dogs from a Lutheran mission in Chicago who traveled 800 miles to Newtown to bring comfort to the victims’ families and friends. What do we have that binds us during times of crisis, if not compassion?

Thank you for listening to our show.

Feel free to write me with guest suggestions!
