Why we make films

For several of the last few months, I was based out of Berlin. Came for the yearly Berlinale (Berlin Film Festival) and stayed to begin a documentary that will be filmed in Paris and the country of Georgia.

This annual trek to one of the world’s most prestigious festivals is an adventure I choose never to miss.

The streets of an already creative city are filled with attention-seeking stars, political officials, fans and journalists. But the high-profile attendees are not as compelling for me as the fans, like this sweet couple waiting for a glimpse at the glitter.

I am certain I now know why I make films. I make them because they bring love and joy to others.

Frederich lifts Ida so she can see the stars arriving on the red carpet at the 2014 Berlinale.

Frederich lifts Ida so she can see the stars arriving on the red carpet at the 2014 Berlinale.

Watching 30 films in competition over the course of ten days is physically daunting, emotionally and creatively rewarding so I do it every year. And those films and the inspiration they bring to my life provide the batteries to keep me going for the next year, until it all starts again.

Why do you make films?

Blackmagic Design Announces New Apple ProRes formats

(I’m off to the Blackmagic event in Burbank, then flying, in my car mobile to San Diego for ComicCon so am sending this out exactly as just received from Blackmagic. More details to follow.)

Fremont, CA – July 17, 2014 – Blackmagic Design today announced announced the immediate availability of Camera 1.8.2 software which adds three new Apple ProRes™ file formats for the Blackmagic Cinema Camera, Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera and Blackmagic Production Camera 4K. Camera 1.8.2 update is available now free of charge from the Blackmagic Design website.

Blackmagic Design camera customers have always been able to record in both CinemaDNG RAW or compressed ProRes 422 HQ formats, however now this new software update adds three additional Apple ProRes™ file formats, ProRes 422, ProRes 422 LT and ProRes 422 Proxy. This means customers using Blackmagic Design cameras will be able to get significantly smaller video file sizes allowing much longer recording durations on the same media card, all while preserving full frame 10-bit 4:2:2 quality.

Because this update is available to our camera customers free of charge, they simply need to download it, and install the update from their Mac or Windows machine using a simple USB cable connection to the camera. Once the update is complete, customers will see these new formats available in the camera menus.

Because this update reduces the data rate of recording, it means customers can now choose lower cost SSD or SD cards while still recording high quality video in SD, HD and Ultra HD resolutions. Using ProRes 422 Proxy it is possible to record 230 minutes of 1080HD video on a single 64GB SD drive. Selecting the type of ProRes format for recording can be set via the on screen menus and all ProRes types can be played back instantly.

The Apple ProRes 422 formats are designed specifically for multi-stream non linear editing, minimal generation loss and fast export, making them very popular video file formats for post production and broadcast. All ProRes files recorded with Blackmagic Cinema Cameras and Blackmagic Production Camera 4K can be opened directly in DaVinci Resolve 11 and Apple Final Cut Pro X™ for immediate color correction, editing and finishing.

“We are extremely excited to release this next update for our camera customers ,” said Grant Petty, CEO of Blackmagic Design. “With the addition of the 3 new ProRes formats, cinematographers can now record for longer on low cost SSD’s and SD cards without sacrificing image quality, as they are still recording in full 10 bit 4:2:2 quality. Because our cameras feature a software centric design, we are very excited to be able to update our cameras with more and more features over time and make the cameras better and better! And there is more to come!”

Availability and Price

Camera 1.8.2 is available now for download from the Blackmagic Design web site free of charge for all Blackmagic Cinema Camera, Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera and Blackmagic Production Camera 4K customers.

Eight Signs You are Dating a Psychopath (or working with one?)

8 Signs You are Dating a Psychopath

(Note: Although she does not mention it, I suspect that some of these signs apply to the workplace as well.)

Author, Sherrie Campbell, PhD, tells us how to recognize and get rid of the psychopaths in our lives.[/caption]Guest Post by: Sherrie Campbell, Ph.D.

Are you in a love-relationship with a psychopath? Psychopaths are nearly impossible to detect. They appear to be normal, happy, charming, wonderful people who have it together. They do not appear disturbed, callous or devious. They tend to be extremely successful, convincing and in control of their lives. So, unless you are clear on what to look for, you could end up in the worst and most confusingly devastating experience of your life. These experiences can be so devastating that you lose trust in yourself, you lose hope in people and become confused about who and what to believe.

Author, Sherrie Campbell, PhD, tells us how to recognize and get rid of the psychopaths in our lives.

Author, Sherrie Campbell, PhD, tells us how to recognize and get rid of the psychopaths in our lives.

Signs to look for:

1. Queen Bee: Psychopath’s are smooth and move quickly in the beginning of a relationship. They take charge of the pace and comment endlessly on your beauty, intelligence and uniqueness in ways not previously verbalized to you where you felt you were genuinely seen for who you really are. Any insecurity you have he will build you up to think that he sees just the opposite in you. To be idolized feels amazing. It is designed to trigger that all-essential-feeling of wanting to be the most important person in another’s life. This is how he hooks you. Once this phase ends he will abruptly shut the attention off. Left confused and shocked you work tirelessly to get back to being his Queen Bee.

2. Soul Mates: Psychopath’s are chameleons and shape-change to make you believe that the two of you are soul mates, that no two people could possibly find a connection like you share. He will mirror all your pain with a similar story and mirror all your interests as if they are also his. All this is, is a game of copy-cat. He has no real identity of his own and so he becomes you and mirrors you back to yourself.

3. Chemistry: Best sex you have ever had? He will initially go out of his way to please you and give you the best sexual experience of your life only to get you hooked. Once you are hooked sex is also abruptly shut off and you’ll find yourself feeling insecure, rejected and doing what you can to get him to give it you again. Thus, you chase and he runs with all the control.

4. Devaluing: Now that the idealizing phase is over, the psychopath sees you as prey and begins the process of chipping away at your self-esteem by devaluing you. This usually starts with the silent treatment. He silences you over something small making you feel as if you are the worst most flawed person in existence. Then he will begin to disappear and stop showing up in your life with any consistency leaving you guessing and insecure.

6. Discard: Once you have been devalued the next step is to discard you. He has sucked you in with idealizing you, begins devaluing you making you feel desperate, confused and needy and then he ends it all by discarding you. You no longer inspire him because he was able to capture and control you. Meanwhile he has pulled you completely off your rhythm and you’re left trying assemble the shards of yourself which have been strewn about, while he moves happily on to a new target.

7. “Hovering”: Psychopaths never go away because once they discard you, they still see you as “supply” for their attention needs. He doesn’t want you but he also doesn’t want you to move on. If he senses you are done with him he will begin showing up either passively or directly to try and “win” you back. This is called hovering. Like a vacuum he wants to suck you back in. He will promise you the world, go back idealizing you only to get you in his clutches to discard you again and start the process all over.

The only way to get rid of a psychopath is to cut communication and contact completely. As long as you stay in any kind of contact you fuel his games and his power over you. He will make your life very difficult. Do not get tricked by the hovering because all he’s looking for is to get you back into your position of being his “supply.”

Little Life Message: Being ignored is a psychopaths kryptonite.

Gadget Review: Evutec Cases – Sleek, Strong, Stylish

Evutec LogoIt’s the little things isn’t it? Form, function, durability and good looks all come in a small, sexy package with Evutec’s cases for your phone. I have an iPhone so mine looks like this:

Evutec's Wood S Series case for iPhone 5/5s in beautiful Bamboo.

Evutec’s Wood S Series case for iPhone 5/5s in beautiful Bamboo.

I chose bamboo because it is environmentally friendly, plus feels good and naturally rich in my hands. Love it. But, it’s more than good-looking, these cases are made from multiple layers of real wood veneer protected with DuPont’s Kevlar and is RoHS2 compliant for those of us who really care about our world. They are light (only 0.9mm thin) and incredibly strong, snapping securely into place. The Wood S Series comes in light or dark bamboo.

For those business meetings that command a sleek and business-like presence, choose the Karbon S or SP Series (with an extra layer of protection) in black/gray or red/black. These cases are five times as strong as steel yet don’t block cell signals and are also protected with DuPont’s Kevlar.
